“Rivers Power Deal Sealed” — Fubara Endorses Wike’s Candidate To Succeed Him

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has formally declared his membership of the Rainbow Coalition led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, while endorsing President Bola Tinubu and Kingsley Chinda ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Fubara announced his political position on Wednesday during the groundbreaking and foundation-laying ceremony for the Rivien Medical Industry project at Rumuosi in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The governor declared his support for Tinubu’s bid for a second term as president and backed Chinda, the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, to succeed him as governor of Rivers State.

Addressing supporters at the event, Fubara urged them to follow his political direction and align with the Rainbow Coalition, which brings together political actors from different parties under Wike’s leadership.

“I am supporting President Tinubu for the presidency and O.K. Chinda to be the next governor of Rivers State,” Fubara said.

“I am part of the Rainbow Coalition, and I’m back to my political family.”

The declaration represents Fubara’s clearest public identification with the political structure controlled by Wike following years of disagreement between the governor and his predecessor.

The political crisis had divided Rivers State, disrupted relations between the executive and the House of Assembly and created competing camps among prominent politicians and grassroots supporters.

Fubara’s statement that he had returned to his political family indicates a renewed alignment with Wike and members of the coalition ahead of the forthcoming elections.

The Rainbow Coalition comprises politicians drawn mainly from the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party who have agreed to work together in support of Tinubu’s re-election and selected candidates in Rivers State.

Wike had previously maintained that the coalition would collectively determine who would occupy elective positions in the state, including the governorship seat.

The endorsement strengthens Chinda’s governorship campaign by bringing the serving governor publicly behind his candidacy and urging Fubara’s supporters to join the coalition.

Fubara’s declaration also appears to end speculation about whether he would seek another term or support a different candidate in the Rivers governorship election.

By backing Chinda, the governor has indicated that he will not pursue re-election but will work with Wike’s political structure to determine the next leadership of the state.

The development marks another major shift in Rivers politics following the prolonged conflict between Fubara and Wike, who supported his emergence as governor in the 2023 election before their relationship deteriorated.

With the governor now declaring that he is back in his political family, the Rainbow Coalition is expected to intensify mobilisation for Tinubu and Chinda across Rivers State.
