Sharing details of the meeting on X, he said that the relations between the two countries have been ‘gradually normalising’. He attributed the progress to the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan in October 2024.
In his opening remarks, Jaishankar said the meeting provided an opportunity to review bilateral ties and exchange views on key regional and global developments.

“Excellency, I am glad to meet you again. Our participation in the EAS and the ASEAN Regional Forum not only provides an occasion to exchange views collectively, but also hold this bilateral meeting,” he said.
Peace along border is pre-requisite for normal ties
Jaishankar said India believes a stable and cooperative relationship with China should be built on mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity, adding that such ties would contribute to a multipolar Asia and a multipolar world.
He stressed that peace and tranquility in the border areas remain the pre-requisite for normal bilateral relations, noting that both countries have been working towards that objective since October 2024.
“Peace and tranquility in the border areas is obviously the pre-requisite for normal ties. Since October 2024, both sides have engaged to ensure that important objective. This will continue to need our constant attention. Relevant mechanisms in this domain must be given full support and strong encouragement,” he added.
Jaishankar flags trade, supply chain concerns
The minister welcomed the recent steps taken by both sides to improve ties, including the resumption of direct flights, updates to the visa regime, the restart of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and the resumption of border trade.
At the same time, he said several issues still needed to be addressed, including fair market access, supply chain predictability and official and people-to-people exchanges.
“However, there are also important dimensions of our ties that need to be addressed. Fair market access and a trade balance rank high in that regard. There are also concerns about predictability of supply chains. Facilitating both official and people-to-people exchanges merit our attention,” he said.
He also called for meetings under various mechanisms and platforms to be held in line with mutually priorities.
Thanks China for BRICS support
Jaishankar also thanked China for supporting India’s BRICS chairship this year. “India is the chair of the BRICS this year. Let me take the opportunity to appreciate the support that China has given to various BRICS activities and initiatives during our chairship,” he shared on X.
He also said the current global situation was ‘extremely complicated’, making it important for both countries to exchange views on pressing developments.
