Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a suspected informant for the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State, with the suspect allegedly confessing to guiding terrorists during a deadly attack on the community last month.

The suspect was apprehended by troops of the 149 Battalion (Motorised), working alongside members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), during an intelligence-led operation in Gubio on July 14.

According to security sources, the arrest followed actionable intelligence linking the suspect to terrorist activities in the area.

During a preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted to serving as an informant for ISWAP and participating in the June 16, 2026, attack on Gubio, which claimed the life of a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force while defending the community against the insurgents.

A video of the interrogation, shared by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, showed the suspect making the confessional statements in Hausa.

The suspect identified himself as a native of Gubio but denied having any family ties with members of the terrorist group.

He, however, admitted knowing a suspected terrorist identified as “Adam Boko Haram,” describing him as a friend who recruited him into carrying out assignments for the insurgents.

According to the suspect, his initial task was to purchase Tramadol for the terrorist commander.

He further disclosed that although he had spent several nights with the alleged terrorist, their relationship had lasted for less than two months.

Speaking on the June 16 attack, the suspect confessed that the terrorists intercepted him before the operation and compelled him to lead them to their target.

He claimed the insurgents arrived on about 30 motorcycles, although only three motorcycles initially conveyed him.

The suspect further admitted that after leading the terrorists to the location, he was instructed to remain seated once the attack commenced.

He alleged that the gunmen spread out and opened fire immediately after he showed them the target.

According to his account, the terrorists later returned to pick him up after the operation before fleeing the area together.

The Nigerian military has yet to issue an official statement on the arrest as of the time of filing this report.
