Team Nigeria has continued its dominance in African flag football, winning two gold medals and one silver at the 2026 NFL Flag American Football African Championships in Kenya.
The Nigerian women’s team successfully defended its continental title by claiming gold, while the country’s Under-13 mixed team also emerged as champions.

The men’s team settled for silver after narrowly losing the final to Egypt.
The impressive performance comes as a major boost for Nigeria ahead of the NFL Flag Football World Cup in Germany later this year.
Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, congratulated the team, describing flag football as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing sports with the potential to become one of the country’s leading disciplines.
Olopade praised the leadership of the Nigerian Federation of American Football (NFAF), led by President Babajide Akeredolu, for the achievement.
“I want to salute the President of the Nigerian Federation of American Football (NFAF), Babajide Akeredolu, and his entire board for this great feat. It only shows that Nigeria has unprecedented qualities in every aspect of sports, and we only need to continue to provide the enablers for consistent success to be achieved,” he said.
He urged the federation to build on the success in Kenya as preparations intensify for the World Cup, assuring the team of the commission’s continued support.
“I want to charge the federation to use this tournament as a springboard as the team prepares for the World Cup in Germany later this year. They should be assured that the commission will continue to support them to have a good outing at the World Cup,” Olopade added.
