United States President Donald Trump has commended President Bola Tinubu for his efforts in tackling terrorism in Nigeria.
The commendation was conveyed in a letter dated July 6, according to a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
In the letter, Trump praised Tinubu’s “decisive leadership” and commitment to addressing security challenges, particularly violence affecting communities in the country.
“It is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous,” Trump stated.
He emphasised the importance of the United States–Nigeria relationship, noting that both countries share a common goal of confronting terrorism.
Trump referenced the 2026 US–Nigeria Defence Cooperation Roadmap as a key framework for strengthening joint efforts, adding that US Special Operations Forces have supported Nigerian troops with training, intelligence, and operational capacity.
“I am proud to have deployed the United States Special Operations Forces… to equip the Armed Forces of Nigeria with the skills, tools and intelligence needed to protect the country,” he said.
Security cooperation between both nations has intensified in recent times, particularly amid regional instability across West Africa.
Recent joint operations reportedly led to the killing of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, described as a senior ISIS commander in the Lake Chad region, alongside several of his lieutenants.
Following these operations, the United States has scaled back troop presence while maintaining intelligence-sharing and strategic collaboration with Nigeria.
Meanwhile, US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, recently visited Nigeria, where he met with senior government officials and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to deepening security and diplomatic ties.
Both countries have since established a joint working group to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
