JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – A 17-year-old student has been taken into custody following a shocking incident in which he was caught on camera allegedly raping a 17-year-old female junior student in a bushy area near their school The case has reignited urgent concerns about the pervasive threat of sexual violence and the safety of learners within school environments across South Africa.
According to reports, the suspect, a Grade 11 learner from a school in Polokwane, appeared in the Polokwane Children’s Court on charges of rape and sexual assault, facing multiple counts from separate incidents . In the most recent case, video evidence captured the alleged assault of a female student in a bush, highlighting the dangerous nature of such isolated areas, which research has identified as high-risk zones for sexual violence against schoolgirls .
Police confirmed that the suspect was arrested after being handed over by his adoptive mother, who is also a teacher at the school . This incident follows a recent surge in reports of sexual violence within educational contexts. Police crime statistics for the fourth quarter of 2024 revealed that out of over 11,000 reported rape cases, 74 occurred at schools, prompting non-governmental organizations to call for stricter vetting and safety protocols
