Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has called on Nigerians to continue supporting the national women’s team after confirming she will miss the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco due to injury.
The Al-Ittihad defender announced on Friday that she is still recovering and will not be available for Nigeria’s title defence at the continental tournament.
“The body is asking for more time and I’m listening,” Plumptre wrote on her X account.
Defender confirms injury setback
Plumptre admitted she was disappointed to miss the competition but expressed confidence that she would return to represent Nigeria once she fully recovers.
“Sad to be missing this WAFCON yet hopeful in the prospect of getting to fight alongside these women again with the support of Nigerians everywhere when the body is ready to compete again,” she said.

She also appealed to fans to stand by the players throughout the tournament.
“So, in the meantime, back these women, back them on their quest for victory once more. Go easy on them, they need you. I am with you ladies. Naija no dey carry last,” she concluded.
Plumptre has become an important figure in the Super Falcons since switching her international allegiance from England to Nigeria.
She played a key role in the team’s successful WAFCON campaign last year, helping the Falcons defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final to win a record 10th continental title.
Falcons target another title
Head coach Justine Madugu recently named a 25-player squad for the tournament, with Plumptre among the notable absentees.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade leads the squad, which also includes goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Osinachi Ohale, midfielder Jennifer Echegini and veteran forward Asisat Oshoala.
Nigeria will begin their campaign in Group C, where they will face Egypt, Zambia and tournament newcomers Malawi.
The 2026 WAFCON will take place in Morocco from July 26 to August 16 and will feature 16 teams for the first time. Nigeria will be aiming to extend their record by winning an 11th African title, while the four semi-finalists will qualify automatically for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
