During an interview on The Hugh Hewitt Show, Trump warned that the US is ‘watching it closely.’
“We see no activity there. They’re not doing well with their nuclear situation. Every time we hear about it, we blow it up. So, they don’t like talking about it, but we’ll probably give Pickaxe a shot relatively soon. We will do that. We’re going to take out Pickaxe Mountain. Tell the Iranians to be ready. There’s not anything they can do about it.”
Here is what makes Pickaxe Mountain so important and why it has become a key focus.
Located in the Zagros Mountains and built deep inside, Pickaxe, covered by 600 metres of granite rock, is one of the most heavily protected nuclear related sites in Iran and extremely difficult to reach or destroy.
According to The National reports, construction of the underground facility began around 2020.
Experts from the Institute for Science and International Security have studied satellite images and found that Iran has been digging two large underground tunnel complexes beneath Pickaxe Mountain. Experts believe the site might be used in the future to enrich uranium, build centrifuges or safely store Iran’s highly enriched uranium deep underground to protect it from airstrikes.
Iran has so far not officially revealed the exact purpose of the underground facility.
