Cameron Jibril Thomaz, better known as Wiz Khalifa, was born on September 8, 1987. He is an American rapper, singer-songwriter, entrepreneur, and actor. He grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and signed with Rostrum Records, a local independent label, to release his first studio album, Show and Prove, in 2006. The next year, he briefly worked with Warner Bros. Records. In 2008, his single “Say Yeah,” which had a Eurodance style, got airplay on urban radio and made it onto the Rhythmic Top 40 and Hot Rap Songs charts, marking his first minor hit.
After leaving Warner Bros., Thomaz released his second album, Deal or No Deal, on his own in 2009. He put out two more mixtapes before signing with Atlantic Records in July 2010. His first single with the label, “Black and Yellow,” was inspired by his hometown of Pittsburgh. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned two Grammy nominations. His next singles, “Roll Up” and “No Sleep,” also made it into the top 40. These songs came out before his third album and first major label release, Rolling Papers, in 2011. Although reviews were mixed, the album reached number two on the Billboard 200.

Biography & Early life
Cameron Jibril Thomaz was born on September 8, 1987, in Minot, North Dakota. His parents, Lawrence Thomaz and Katie Wimbush, both served in the Air Force. They divorced when he was about three years old. Because of his parents’ military careers, he moved often and lived in Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan. Around 1996, he and his mother settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he went to Taylor Allderdice High School. Not long after moving to Pittsburgh, he started writing and performing his own lyrics before he became a teenager.
His stage name is derived from Khalifa, an Arabic word meaning “successor”, and wisdom, which was shortened to Wiz when Khalifa was a young boy. Khalifa stated to Spinner.com that the name also came from being called “young Wiz ’cause I was good at everything I did, and my granddad is Muslim, so he gave me that name; he felt like that’s what I was doing with my music.” He got a tattoo of his stage name on his 17th birthday.
By the age of 15, he was regularly recording his music at a local studio called I.D. Labs. Impressed by the young teen’s talent, E. Dan, the owner of the studio, offered Khalifa an internship in exchange for free recording time. Dan, being a veteran of the Pittsburgh hip-hop scene, would help develop and mentor the young artist early on in his career.
Personal life
Khalifa started dating model Amber Rose in early 2011. They got engaged on March 1, 2012, and married on July 8, 2013. Their son was born in 2013. On September 24, 2014, it was announced that Rose would file for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. As of 2015, Khalifa and Rose share joint custody of their son.
On June 16, 2024, Khalifa announced that he and his girlfriend of five years, Aimee Aguilar, are expecting their first child, a daughter.
Khalifa is open about using cannabis and has said in interviews that he spends $10,000 a month on it and smokes daily. Since early 2014, he no longer pays for cannabis and is sponsored by The Cookie Company, a medical marijuana dispensary that sells his “Khalifa Kush” (KK) strain, which he developed with RiverRock Cannabis.
Khalifa began training in the martial art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu in May 2017 with Rigan Machado, an 8th-degree red and black belt. Shortly after, he began training in Muay Thai with former UFC bantamweight title contender Cat Zingano and at the Unbreakable Performance Centre in Los Angeles.
On April 24, 2018, Yokkao held a private Muay Thai seminar for Khalifa at Unbreakable, featuring Thai boxing legend Saenchai.
In April 2023, it was announced that Khalifa would compete in his first Brazilian jiu-jitsu match under the High Rollerz rules, though his opponent had not been confirmed.
In July 2024, Khalifa was arrested in Romania for illegal drug possession after he smoked cannabis onstage during a concert. On December 18, 2025, the Constanta Court of Appeal in Romania sentenced him in absentia to nine months in prison. It is not clear if Romania will request his extradition, as he is a US citizen and does not live in Romania. On December 19, 2025, it was reported that the nine-month prison sentence for the July 2024 cannabis charge was final.
