Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State have adopted the direct primary mode for the forthcoming governorship primary election, as part of efforts to ensure inclusiveness and party unity ahead of the 2027 polls.
The decision was reached during a high-level meeting involving governorship aspirants, National Assembly members, and other critical stakeholders of the party.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Abdullahi Sule said the move reflected the collective will of party members and aligned with the democratic ideals being promoted at the national level.
He noted that the adoption of direct primary would give all registered party members the opportunity to participate in choosing the party’s candidate.
According to him, the majority of stakeholders supported the process, which also aligns with the position of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on expanding internal democracy within political parties.
NOP NIGERIA reports that the governor assured aspirants and party faithful that the primary election would be conducted in a transparent and credible manner, in strict compliance with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act.
“Nobody, nobody whatsoever will have any excuse to leave the party, because we are going to have a very transparent, very democratic process in line with the constitution of the party and the Electoral Act. So the person who leaves after losing is leaving because he does not know how to lose,” Sule stated.
On the contentious issue of zoning, Sule declared that the governorship slot should be ceded to the Nasarawa West Senatorial Zone in the interest of fairness and equity.
He stressed that the decision was guided by the spirit of brotherhood and the need to give all parts of the state a sense of belonging.
“I keep insisting, and I stand by that, in line with the spirit of brotherhood, let us take it to Keffi Zone, which has not produced a governor for twenty years,” he said.
The governor commended party stakeholders for their cooperation and maturity during deliberations, expressing optimism that the APC would emerge stronger from the primary process.
He added that the party was positioning itself for victory in the 2027 general elections, urging members to remain united and committed to the party’s success.
