Senator Ibrahim Khalid Mustapha, who represents Kaduna North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing unresolved internal crises rocking the party.
NOP NIGERIA reports that the lawmaker’s resignation was contained in a letter dated March 27, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman of Soba Ward in Soba Local Government Area.
Mustapha said his decision was driven by the persistent leadership tussles, ongoing court cases, and divisions within the party, which he said had made continued participation difficult.
“The internal crisis, unending court cases and the resulting leadership disagreement and divisions within the party at various levels have made it increasingly difficult for me to continue my membership, active participation and commitment as a member,” he stated.
The senator noted that the recurring conflicts had eroded the unity and clear direction that once defined the party, making it challenging for him to align with its current structure and operations.
According to him, the situation within the party no longer reflects the ideals that initially attracted him to the PDP.
Despite his exit, Mustapha expressed gratitude to party members and supporters who had stood by him throughout his political journey.
“I sincerely thank all the party faithful for their support and belief in me over the years. You have been a strong pillar and I remain deeply appreciative of the trust and encouragement I have received,” he added.
Mustapha concluded by stating that the letter should be treated as his official and formal notice of resignation from the PDP.
The development comes amid reports that the senator may be preparing to join the African Democratic Congress, though this has not been officially confirmed.
NOP NIGERIA reports that Mustapha’s defection comes weeks after three Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection was announced during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The lawmakers, in separate letters, cited the internal crisis and leadership issues affecting the PDP for their decisions to defect to the APC.
The defectors are:
1. Sen. Ikra Bilbis, Senator representing Zamfara Central
2. Sen. Aminu Iya Abbas, Senator representing the Adamawa Central
3. Sen. Amos Yohanna, Senator representing Adamawa North.
