Kenya has officially fulfilled its financial obligations to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), paying the required $30 million hosting fee to secure its role as a co-host of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking in a statement on Tuesday, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Salim Mvurya, described the payment as a strong indication of the country’s readiness to deliver a successful tournament.

The development marks a significant step in the country’s preparations for the continental football showpiece.

“This payment reaffirms Kenya’s credibility, readiness, and unwavering commitment to delivering a successful continental tournament,” Mvurya said.

The minister disclosed that the government had also inaugurated a restructured Multi-Agency Local Organising Committee to oversee preparations.

“We have brought together key players from both the public and private sectors to ensure all critical areas of delivery are covered,” he added.

Mvurya stressed that preparations for the tournament extend beyond financial obligations, noting that the government is working on policies to ensure seamless hosting.

“Next month, we will deliberate on the establishment of a harmonised framework to support visa facilitation, coordinated tax exemptions, customs measures, and streamlined clearance procedures for all goods and services directly related to AFCON,” he said.

The sports minister noted that the move reflects the vision of President William Ruto to position Kenya as a leading destination for global sporting events.

“Sports is not only a unifying force but also a catalyst for economic growth, youth empowerment, job creation, and international prestige,” he explained.

NOP NIGERIA reports that Kenya will co-host the 2027 tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania under the “Pamoja” initiative, highlighting regional cooperation in delivering a world-class event.

“We are fully committed to delivering a tournament that will exceed both continental and global expectations,” Mvurya said.
