Yobe state has graduated 1,485 nurses and midwives from the Shehu Sule College of Nursing Sciences in a triple ceremony that also featured the commissioning of new projects and the launch of a government achievement magazine.

Deputy governor Idi Barde Gubana, representing Governor Mai Mala Buni, presided over the event held at the college’s conference hall.

The deputy governor Wednesday announced that all 1,485 graduands from the 2022–2025 academic cycle have been offered automatic employment into the state health service, except 122 who are awaiting the governor’s final approval.

Gubana described the achievement as remarkable for a state recovering from over a decade of security challenges. He credited healthcare workers, mostly products of the college, for their professionalism.

He said the present administration has built 142 primary healthcare centres, upgraded 12 hospitals, employed over 3,500 health workers, and established a biomedical research centre to tackle chronic kidney disease.

The deputy governor further stated that the college now ranks third nationally, with 100% accreditation, and added that the first set of 62 HND nurses were inducted on April 4.

Earlier in her remarks, the provost of the college, Hajiya Hadiza Sabo, said the guaranteed employment policy has driven applicant numbers from 600 before 2019 to over 3,000 for the 2025/2026 session.

She revealed that this is not obtainable in any state across the region or the country.
