A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ladan Salihu, has said the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government would collapse under what he described as growing public anger and frustration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Salihu made the remark during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he delivered a strong critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and its prospects at the next polls.
“When it comes to credible elections and elections that are based on integrity, this government will fail the integrity and credibility test at the polls. This government will not measure up with the anger and the frustrations of the Nigerian people,” he said.
The ADC chieftain also stepped up his party’s call for the resignation or removal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, accusing him of failing both integrity and competence tests. INEC has, however, denied the allegations, insisting its leadership remains neutral.
“Amupitan should resign or should be removed because in public service today, Amupitan to me is the number one persona non grata,” Salihu said.
He argued that the INEC chairman had not demonstrated the level of impartiality expected of an electoral umpire in a country of over 200 million people.
“By his actions, his utterances and the way he conducts government business, he scandalises every person that has integrity in Nigeria,” he added.
When asked whether the ADC would consider boycotting the election if Amupitan remained in office, Salihu declined to give a firm position.
“The election is our constitutional responsibility as the leading opposition movement. When we get to that stage, we will make a decision about it,” he said, adding that the opposition would intensify its push for the chairman’s removal if he neither resigns nor is dismissed.
Despite the APC’s dominance in 31 states and its majority in the National Assembly, Salihu maintained that the ruling party still lacked grassroots support.
“They have 31 governors, they have control of the Senate and the House, but they don’t have control of the people,” he said, expressing confidence that the ADC would make significant gains in 2027.
