The Arewa Think Tank (ATT) Sunday criticised the decision by the United States of America to authorise the withdrawal of non-essential staff from its embassy in Abuja, stating that the move is capable of sending wrong signals to the international community.

Speaking through its convener, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu in Kaduna, the group said such actions could undermine investor confidence and project Nigeria negatively at a time the country is working to attract foreign investment.

He also cautioned opposition political parties against actions capable of undermining Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He warned against what it described as attempts to “pull down the roof of democracy.”

Yakubu urged political actors to operate within the bounds of the law and prioritise national stability over personal ambition, saying that democracy must be protected through adherence to rules, ethics and due process.

“Democracy is not a battlefield for reckless ambition, it is a disciplined arena governed by rules and national responsibility,” he said.

Yakubu added that the opposition has a critical role to play in strengthening democratic institutions, but warned against any attempt to bypass lawful processes in the quest for power.

“We support a vibrant opposition, but not one that gambles with the stability of the country. Without respect for the rules, there will be no democracy to inherit,” he added.

He called on political leaders to demonstrate maturity and place the interest of the nation above personal or party considerations as the country approaches another election cycle.
