Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA) has declared support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, insisting that the North should wait until 2031 in line with Nigeria’s informal zoning arrangement.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its Speaker, Mohammed Salihu Danlami, the group declared that the 2027 presidential contest would favour Tinubu, warning Northern politicians against joining the race.
“There is no vacancy in Aso Rock till May 29, 2031. Allowing the South to complete its eight-year tenure is critical to national unity, fairness and political stability”.
AYA argued that political fairness demands respect for rotational understanding, recalling that during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, political actors from the South largely stepped down from presidential ambitions, allowing the North to complete its eight-year tenure.
According to the group, the same principle should now be upheld in the interest of equity and national cohesion.
The group warned that any Northern politician who chooses to contest the 2027 presidential election in disregard of the arrangement would face opposition from youths across the region.
Reaffirming its stance, the group described the 2027 election as a test of political continuity and national unity, stressing that any attempt to disrupt the rotational understanding could undermine Nigeria’s stability.
The group further pledged the support of Northern youths for Tinubu’s second-term ambition, adding that national cohesion must take precedence over regional or personal political interests.
Beyond zoning considerations, the group also commended the Tinubu administration for what it described as bold economic reforms, noting that such policies have contributed to improved fiscal stability and a stronger external reserves position.
AYA said the reforms, though challenging, were necessary steps toward long-term economic recovery
