The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will participate in the 2027 general elections, despite speculations about the party’s future.

Wike made the statement during a media parley on Friday, dismissing claims that the PDP might lose relevance ahead of the next election cycle.

According to him, although the party has not produced a president since 2015, it has remained active and continues to play significant roles at various levels of government.

“I have no doubt that we have a lot of work to do. But what is important is that the PDP will be on the ballot in 2027, contrary to claims by some pundits that the party will not be there,” he said.

The former Rivers State governor stressed the need for the PDP to strengthen its structures at sub-national levels rather than focusing solely on the presidency.

“Everything is not about president, president, president,” Wike stated, noting that political parties must remain competitive at state and local levels.

He also cautioned against presenting a presidential candidate without adequate preparation, emphasising that contesting elections requires both emotional and psychological readiness.

Wike further advised political parties to build strong grassroots support, warning that winning the presidency without strong control at lower levels could weaken overall party influence.

The PDP has faced internal challenges since 2025, with rival factions linked to Wike and some governors holding separate conventions and contesting control of the party in court, raising concerns about its unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
