Mats Wieffer ended a 16-month wait for a goal with a decisive brace as Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Burnley to keep their European push alive in the Premier League.
Victory at Turf Moor leaves Brighton ninth and within two points of sixth-placed Chelsea, while Burnley slip closer to relegation after another bleak afternoon. The Clarets have only one league win since October and sit 12 points from safety with six matches remaining.
Burnley thought they had scored early when Jaidon Anthony found the net, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. Brighton soon took control and nearly went ahead when Danny Welbeck failed to punish a mix-up involving captain Maxime Esteve and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
The breakthrough came two minutes before the break. Wieffer arrived late in the box to side-foot home from Pascal Gross’s low delivery. Brighton pressed for a second before half-time but could not convert.
Burnley’s frustrations continued after the restart when another close-range effort was chalked off for offside, and Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen produced a vital stop to deny Zian Flemming. Wieffer sealed the points in the final minute with a strike from the edge of the area, his first goals since December 2024.
It was Brighton’s third straight league win as the pressure continues to mount for Burnley and manager Scott Parker.
Elsewhere, Everton fought back twice to draw 2-2 with Brentford FC after a dramatic stoppage-time leveller from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Igor Thiago opened the scoring from the penalty spot after a rash challenge by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Everton responded through Beto, who glanced home a header before Thiago restored Brentford’s lead via a deflection.
With rain pouring down in west London, Dewsbury-Hall struck deep into added time to snatch a point. Brentford remain seventh on goal difference, level on 47 points with Everton, leaving both sides firmly in the hunt for European qualification.
