2027: UN Envoy Praises Opposition, Backs Alarm On General Elections

Olufemi Aduwo

A United Nations envoy, Olufemi Aduwo, has commended Nigeria’s opposition political parties for raising concerns over the conduct of the 2027 general elections, warning that safeguarding democratic principles must remain a national priority.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Aduwo aligned with the opposition’s position that the country’s democracy faces significant tests ahead of the polls, urging stakeholders to ensure that the electoral process remains transparent, credible and inclusive.

He referenced Nigeria’s political history, particularly the 1965 crisis in Ibadan, noting that past electoral irregularities had far-reaching consequences and should serve as a warning against any attempt to undermine democratic institutions.

The envoy noted that the opposition’s declaration of “Operation Free and Fair and Democratic General Election 2027” reflected growing public demand for electoral accountability and a rejection of practices that could erode trust in the system.

Aduwo also criticised the culture of political entitlement, pointing to the “Emi Lo Lekan” slogan from the 2023 election cycle, and said Nigerians were now asserting a collective voice with the response, “Nigeria lo kan,” to emphasise national interest above individual ambition.

“This time, it is not written in violence, but in unyielding resolve. The note that was first written in Ibadan has returned with even greater force in 2027.

“The opposition political parties have met and resolved: Operation Free and Fair and Democratic General Election 2027 has begun. In 2027, the people of Nigeria will breathe freely, fairly and without intimidation, rigging, or state capture.

“To all enemies of democracy — those who believe power is their birthright, those who think the will of the people can be permanently suppressed — your time is up. Nigerians are rising with one voice to say: ‘Nigeria lo kan.’

“No more ‘emi lo lekan’ politics. No more selection disguised as election. No more turning the electoral process into a coronation ceremony for the anointed few. 2027 will not be business as usual.

“Operation Free and Fair 2027 is not a threat; it is a solemn promise to the Nigerian people. Nigeria will breathe again, democracy will win, and the will of the people shall prevail. Ignore this message at your own peril,” he added.
