Abeokuta-based transport operator, Akmode Transport Limited, has raised the alarm over an alleged plot by rival commercial motorcycle unions and suspected hoodlums to attack its personnel and disrupt its operations in Ogun State.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the firm’s manager, Mustapha Tiamiyu, claimed that intelligence available to the company indicated that the planned attack would target its field staff across Abeokuta.
Tiamiyu alleged that the attackers were planning to disguise themselves in uniforms resembling those of the company’s staff in a bid to implicate the firm in acts capable of breaching public peace.
According to him, the alleged scheme is aimed at criminalising the company’s operations and forcing it out of business after what he described as several failed attempts by rivals to achieve similar objectives.
He said, “The attackers intend to wear fake jackets designed to look like those of our staff and, in connivance with some alleged security personnel, carry out acts that would portray our workers as criminals.”
The company further alleged that it had, in the past, suffered coordinated attacks on its offices and personnel, which it attributed to rival unions.
Tiamiyu also referenced a recent publication by one Adedamola Adetayo, which reportedly accused the firm of links to criminal activities, including banditry and terrorism.
He, however, dismissed the claims as unsubstantiated, noting that the allegations were under investigation and that the accusers had failed to provide evidence despite being given the opportunity by relevant authorities.
While urging its staff to remain law-abiding and continue their operations without fear, the company called on security agencies in Ogun State to act proactively to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
“We call on the appropriate security agencies and the media to intervene and prevent any impending threat to peace and safety,” the statement added.
Efforts to get reactions from the alleged rival unions were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
The Ogun State Police Command has yet to respond to the allegations.
