Nigeria midfielder Alhassan Yusuf has been named in the Major League Soccer Team of the Week after scoring the decisive goal in New England Revolution’s 1-0 win over D.C. United at Gillette Stadium.
Alhassan Yusuf, 25, scored the winner to continue a promising start to the campaign, taking his tally to two goals in six league appearances. Last season, Yusuf scored twice and provided two assists under head coach Marko Mitrović.
The Nigerian international who has been handed a more advanced role this season, is becoming increasingly influential in the Revs’ attack. The club sit eighth in the Eastern Conference with nine points from six matches and will face Columbus Rhode Island in a US Open Cup clash on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, former Nigeria international Friday Ekpo has called on Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle to include players from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) in the squad for the 2026 Unity Cup.
Nigeria will defend their title at the four-nation tournament scheduled for May 26 to 30 in London, with matches set for The Valley, home of Charlton Athletic FC. The Super Eagles are set to face Jamaica, Zimbabwe, and India in the competition celebrating Afrocentric and global diaspora communities.
Ekpo believes domestic players deserve a chance to prove themselves on the international stage.
“The Unity Cup should be an opportunity for the Super Eagles handler to pick a few of the NPFL players who he thinks are capable of contributing positively to the senior national team,” he said as quoted by Complete Sports.
“I have nothing against inviting foreign players to the team, but neglecting players in the domestic league should not be encouraged because we still have quality players who can be of great value to the team.”
