The Elders Caucus of the ruling Kwara state All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared their support for the aspirations of the Senator representing Kwara North, Senator Sadiq Umar, as their preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship race.
To this end, the elders prevailed on other aspirants eyeing the governorship position from the Kwara North to “willingly” support Senator Umar in the overall interest and spirit of oneness, sense of belonging and unity of purpose, for the people of the district particularly, and entire Kwara state.”
Addressing a press conference in Ilorin, Saturday, Chairman of the APC Elders Caucus, Sir James Ayeni, flanked by other elders said, they had assessed all the aspirants from the senatorial district and came to the conclusion that Umar was the right person to occupy the exalted position come 2027.
Part of the text of the address reads: “Our decision to endorse and support his aspiration, is consistent with and born out of the collective decisions by the Kwara state APC elders caucus, which were made through the press conference addressed at the NUJ secretariat, Ilorin on Monday 21 November, 2022 and also on Sunday 4th of April, 2026.
“In the said press conference, members of the APC elders caucus unequivocally reiterated support for the gubernatorial slot of the party in 2027, to go to a candidate from Kwara North senatorial district. We had given our cogent reason then, for the decision on both occasions.
“Further more, we have come to the conclusion to endorse Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar’s aspirations, based on our findings, after we have engaged and interacted with the aspirants from the senatorial district.
“Thereafter, we have assessed all of them and found him to have excelled above others, in terms of sense of humility to all; complete culturally and socially detribalised attributes; display of ability, capability and capacity to peform; confirmed past impressive records and experiences in both private and public services to the nation and also, possession of other pedigree that are required and demanded, for the exalted office of the governor:
The caucus also reiterated their support for the zoning of the 2027 governorship candidate to Kwara North for “fairness, equity and justice.”
