The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has condemned the recent killings and destruction of property by unknown gunmen in communities in Udege Area Administrative Council, and condoled with families of the victims.

The Speaker of the House, Dr Danladi Jatau, made the condemnation during plenary on Tuesday in Lafia.

Jatau described the act as evil and prayed for God to expose the perpetrators, while also praying for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in the attacks.

He urged residents of the state to continue to live in peace and tolerate one another, irrespective of their affiliations.

“The importance of peace to human and societal development cannot be overemphasised.

“Peace is paramount. We must live in peace with one another, especially as we have a peace-loving and hardworking governor.

“It is when we live in peace that there will be speedy development in the state and the country at large,” he said.

The speaker also prayed for an end to killings in other parts of the country.

In another development, the House passed into second reading a bill for a law to establish the Nasarawa Urban and Rural Access Roads Authority (NURARA).

Jatau said that the bill, when passed into law, would boost the transport system and improve the living conditions of rural dwellers across the state.

“This bill is a good one. It will enable government to open up more rural roads and improve the lives of people at the grassroots,” he said.

The speaker thereafter committed the bill to the House Committee on Works and Transport for further legislative action, directing it to report back on April 14.

Earlier, Mr Suleiman Azara, the Majority Leader of the House, while presenting the substance of the bill, urged his colleagues to support its passage.

Azara said that the proposed agency would be responsible for the construction and maintenance of Class C and Class D roads in the state.

He subsequently moved a motion for the bill to scale second reading, which was seconded by the Minority Leader, Mr Luka Zhekaba.

In their separate contributions, lawmakers, including Mr Luka Zhekaba, Musa Abubakar, Mohammed Omadefu, Garba Isimbabi, Esson Mairiga, Daniel Ogazi and Hudu A. Hudu, described the bill as timely.

They said that its passage would accelerate development, enhance farming activities and improve socio-economic conditions and the standard of living of people, especially at the grassroots.

The House unanimously passed the bill into second reading. (NAN)
