Ogun State has commenced operations of the Ogun State Enterprise Development Agency (OGSEDA) as part of efforts to strengthen Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and support the growth of small businesses across the state.
The agency, established to help entrepreneurs start and grow sustainable businesses, began operations ahead of its official launch expected later in the year.
Speaking during a meeting with the Director-General of OGSEDA, Dr. Segun Dada, at the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Engr. Kehinde Akintomide, described the agency as a major initiative of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration aimed at boosting the MSME sector.
Akintomide said the state government remains committed to creating an enabling environment for both large industries and small businesses, noting that MSMEs play a critical role in economic development.
“His Excellency is not only focused on large-scale industries but also fully appreciates the vital role of MSMEs in economic development. As seen in countries like China, cottage industries form the backbone of economic progress. Ogun State is, therefore, giving equal attention to small businesses,” he said.
He also commended the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) through its Sustainable Economic Development for Decent Employment in Nigeria (SEDIN) programme for supporting the establishment and smooth take-off of the agency.
According to him, the ministry would provide the necessary support and resources needed for the agency to succeed in delivering its mandate to entrepreneurs and business owners in the state.
Also speaking, the Director-General of OGSEDA, Dr. Segun Dada, described his appointment as an opportunity to make meaningful impact through the development of small businesses and entrepreneurship in Ogun State.
Dada said the growth and success of MSMEs remain important indicators of economic progress, adding that the agency would focus on building a stronger support system for entrepreneurs across different sectors.
He further praised the appointment of Engr. Akintomide as Permanent Secretary, noting that his leadership would provide the needed foundation for the agency’s operations and long-term goals.
Officials present at the meeting included the Ministry’s Director of Industrial Promotion, Mr. Femi Adeboye, and Director of Administration and Supplies, Mr. Bayo Sonde.
