A serving Nigerian Army Colonel has reportedly been killed in an ambush by suspected insurgents in Monguno, Borno State, during a reinforcement mission following an overnight attack on a military position.
This is coming few days after a Brigadier General, Oseni Braimah and several soldiers were killed when Boko Haram and Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) terrorists launched a coordinated assault on a military base in Benisheikh.
The latest incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, April 13 2026, when the officer identified as IA Muhammad was ambushed while responding to a distress call at a Forward Operating Base (FOB) linked to the 242 battalion.
According to the sources, insurgents launched a coordinated assault on Sunday night, targeting the FOB in Monguno, a key military hub in the North-East counter-insurgency theatre.
Sources explained that the officer mobilised quickly to support embattled troops but encountered ambush along the route.
The device, described as remotely detonated, reportedly exploded as the vehicle approached, killing the officer instantly and impacting others in the convoy.
