Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has forwarded the name of Alhaji Murtala Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as the new Deputy Governor.

The nomination follows the vacancy created after the voluntary resignation of former Deputy Governor Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026.

According to a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the nomination was made in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which allows a governor to appoint a deputy governor in the event of a vacancy.

The statement noted that the decision came after consultations with key stakeholders across the state.

It described Garo as a seasoned politician with over 20 years of experience in governance and party administration, having served in various roles including Local Government Chairman, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and State Organising Secretary.

He also previously contested as the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 general elections.

The nomination is now subject to confirmation by the Kano State House of Assembly.
