The Cross River State Government has isolated a Chinese national at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital over a suspected case of COVID-19.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, confirmed the development on Tuesday in Calabar, saying the patient is currently under strict medical observation and receiving treatment.
According to him, the individual arrived in Nigeria via Lagos on March 17, 2026, before travelling to Calabar and proceeding to a factory in Akamkpa Local Government Area, where symptoms were first detected at a local clinic.
Health authorities said the case was immediately referred to UCTH, where isolation protocols were activated without delay.
The state government has also begun contact tracing and other emergency public health measures.
Dr. Ayuk added that the state is working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to prevent any possible spread, assuring residents that the situation is under control.
Officials from the World Health Organization in the state also confirmed strengthened surveillance and response systems.
Residents have been urged to remain calm while observing preventive measures such as regular handwashing, vaccination, and avoiding close contact with suspected cases, as health authorities continue monitoring the situation closely.
