Chelsea have dismissed head coach Liam Rosenior just three months after handing him a long-term six-and-a-half-year deal, following a sharp dip in form that left the club hierarchy with little choice.
Liam Rosenior, 41, appointed on January 6 to replace Enzo Maresca, exits Stamford Bridge after 23 matches in all competitions. His record stands at 10 wins, 10 defeats and three draws, but a late-season collapse proved decisive.
Seven of those 10 defeats came in the last eight matches, including five in the Premier League. NOP NIGERIA reports that the final straw arrived on Tuesday night, when Chelsea were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
It marked the club’s fifth straight league defeat without scoring, their worst run in front of goal since 1912.
Chelsea’s ownership group, BlueCo, led by Behdad Eghbali, moved quickly after internal talks on Wednesday to end Rosenior’s tenure. The decision comes just days before the club’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United on Sunday.
A statement from the club read: “Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Liam Rosenior.”
“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, we would like to place on record our gratitude to Liam and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club.
“Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment mid-way through the season.
“This has not been a decision the Club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future.
“Calum McFarlane will take charge of the team as Interim Head Coach until the end of the season with support from existing Club backroom staff, as we strive to achieve European qualification and progress in the FA Cup.
“As the Club works to bring stability to the Head Coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment.”
Chelsea had originally intended to assess Rosenior’s position at the end of the 2027/28 campaign, but the recent slump forced an immediate rethink.
McFarlane will now oversee first-team duties for the remainder of the season as Chelsea attempt to salvage European qualification and push for FA Cup success.
