Fresh controversy has erupted in Nigeria’s political space following allegations that about ₦800bn in public funds may have been channelled into the campaign machinery of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The claim, which has triggered widespread reactions across political and civic circles, has intensified calls for transparency and accountability from the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Although the allegation has yet to be officially substantiated, analysts and stakeholders say the sheer magnitude of the figure involved makes it a matter that cannot be ignored or dismissed as mere political rhetoric.
Public affairs commentators argue that if any portion of public funds was diverted for political purposes, it would amount to a grave breach of public trust, especially amid prevailing economic hardship across the country.
Nigeria has in recent months grappled with rising inflation, high fuel costs, food insecurity, and declining purchasing power, conditions that have placed significant strain on citizens.
Critics say the alleged diversion of public resources for political mobilisation, if proven, would further deepen public frustration, noting that government revenues are meant to address pressing national challenges, including healthcare, education, infrastructure, and security.
“The allegation, even at face value, raises serious moral and governance concerns,” a political analyst said. “At a time when citizens are being urged to endure economic hardship, any suggestion of misuse of public funds for campaigns is bound to provoke outrage.”
Observers have also warned that the controversy could shape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, with increased scrutiny expected on campaign financing, federal allocations, and government spending.
They stressed that transparency would be critical in restoring public confidence, urging relevant authorities to clarify the situation and, if necessary, launch an independent investigation.
