Frank Onyeka is heading back to the top flight after helping Coventry City clinch promotion to the Premier League with a tense 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers on Friday night, April 17.
The Sky Blues needed a single point at Ewood Park to secure their place among England’s elite and delivered when Bobby Thomas struck an 84th-minute equaliser that lifted Coventry to 86 points and confirmed a top-two finish with three matches still to play.
Onyeka started the decisive encounter and played 62 minutes before making way for Victor Torp. The Nigerian completed 26 of 32 passes at an accuracy rate of 81 per cent and chipped in defensively with two tackles, two clearances and six recoveries.
He also impressed in duels, winning five of seven on the ground and three of four in the air while drawing three fouls to steady Coventry during the game.
The midfielder joined on loan from Brentford in January in search of regular minutes after limited opportunities in the top flight. The move proved decisive.
Onyeka made 12 appearances, starting 11, and quickly became central to Coventry’s promotion charge with his energy, positioning and ball-winning presence.
The agreement included an obligation to make the deal permanent if promotion was achieved, a clause now triggered by the club’s return to the Premier League.
Promotion caps a remarkable rise for Coventry. The club were in League Two as recently as 2018 and have rebuilt steadily since. They reached the Championship play-off final in 2023 but lost on penalties to Luton Town, then fell short again the following season after a late semi-final defeat to Sunderland.
Under manager Frank Lampard, who took charge with the team in 17th place, Coventry have surged into one of the division’s most consistent sides and its leading scorers. A brief mid-season wobble proved the only interruption to an otherwise dominant campaign.
The Sky Blues could still finish as champions depending on weekend results, but their long-awaited return to the Premier League is already sealed.
