A gas leakage has occurred at the Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu Ode, Ogun state, shortly after the assembly session on Wednesday April 1, 2026.
The leakage left about 30 students and a teacher hospitalised, at the Ijebu Ode general Hospital after experiencing difficulties in breathing.
Speaking on the incident, the Vice Principal, Mrs Adeola Borogun, said a strange chemical smell was perceived within the school premises, which immediately prompted an emergency response.
“Several students began vomiting and fainting, forcing the school management to call for ambulances from the State General Hospital, Ijebu Ode”, she said.
Meanwhile, the State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, while confirming the incident, however dismissing earlier speculation of an explosion in the school premises.
“No, there is no explosion anywhere. It’s a gas leakage from somewhere. Some say it was from the school laboratory, but some say it must have been from somewhere around the community.
“We are bringing a gas analyzer there now to analyze the type of gas and the concentration zone. So, that will give us the exact cause,” Oresanya said.
He added that the 30 students brought to the hospital are now in stable condition.
