With early alignments for the 2027 general elections taking shape, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, Tuesday, stepped in to calm potential tensions within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Gombe state, while urging aspirants to close ranks and work towards a common goal.
At a meeting in Government House, Gombe, the governor brought together governorship and National Assembly hopefuls on the APC platform in what party insiders described as a deliberate move to prevent internal cracks and build early consensus.
Speaking during the session, Mr. Yahaya stated that the strength of the party would depend on its ability to remain united, warning that personal ambitions must not override collective interest. He said the APC must approach the coming electoral process with discipline and a shared sense of purpose.
Discussions at the meeting focused on how to manage competition among aspirants without triggering divisions. Participants agreed that a transparent and inclusive process would be key to ensuring that whoever emerges as a candidate enjoys broad support within the party.
Several aspirants who spoke commended the governor for initiating the engagement early, describing it as a sign of responsible leadership. They pledged loyalty to the party and expressed confidence in his ability to guide the process in a way that protects the APC’s stability in the state.
A central outcome of the meeting was the endorsement of consensus candidacy as the preferred approach for selecting party flagbearers. Supporters of the idea argued that it could reduce friction and encourage unity, especially in a contest expected to attract multiple interests.
To complement the arrangement, stakeholders proposed micro-zoning as a framework to balance political interests across different areas. The idea, according to participants, would help address concerns about fairness and representation by ensuring that all voices, including those from marginalized communities, are included in the decision-making process.
