Gov Yusuf Holds Closed-door Meeting With Shekarau

Abba Kabir Yusuf Kano Governor1

The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, on Monday, held a closed-door meeting with a former Governor of the State, Ibrahim Shekarau.

The meeting comes amidst political realignments in Kano State ahead of the 2027 elections.

NOP NIGERIA recalls that Governor Yusuf, on his part, recently dumped the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

It would be recalled that prior to Yusuf’s defection to the APC, Shekarau had berated Kwankwaso, for labelling the Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, as a betrayer.

Shekarau, in a video posted on his approved WhatsApp platform, insisted that Governor Yusuf has the fundamental right to defect to any party of his choice.

Shekarau maintained that Yusuf’s decision cannot be termed a betrayal, stressing that Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, acted likewise.

Speaking on his decision, Yusuf explained that he joined the APC to strategically align the state with the centre of national governance to fast-track development.

Yusuf spoke at the 2026 Grand Rally held at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano, where thousands of party faithful and supporters gathered to welcome him into the ruling party.

The governor’s position was contained in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa.

Addressing the mammoth crowd, Yusuf said Kano was too important politically and economically to remain disconnected from the Federal Government.

In a similar development, another former Kano State Governor, and leader of the NNPP, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The former presidential candidate received his party membership card last Monday in Kano.

Kwankwaso registered as a member at Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Bompai, Kano.

The event drew prominent political figures, including David Mark, Aminu Tambuwal, Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, Dino Melaye, and John Odigie-Oyegun.
