At least 13 people have reportedly been killed following a fresh attack by gunmen on Ngbra Zongo community in Kwall District of Bassa.
Several other residents were also said to have sustained injuries during the attack, which occurred in the early hours of Friday in Plateau State.
A community member, Philip Alanga, told journalists in Jos that the attackers invaded the area around midnight and began shooting sporadically while also attacking residents with machetes and other dangerous weapons.
“They came into the community around midnight and started shooting and hacking people to death.
“They moved from one house to another, attacking innocent people,” Alanga said.
He added that many residents fled into nearby bushes for safety as the attackers moved through the community.
Another resident, Chigoji Rocku, disclosed that three pregnant women were among those killed in the assault.
The Secretary General of the Irigwe Development Association, Danjuma Auta, confirmed the incident and described the attack as tragic and condemnable.
Auta lamented the recurring violence affecting communities in Bassa Local Government Area and other parts of Plateau State, calling on security agencies to strengthen efforts to protect vulnerable rural communities.
He also urged security operatives to identify and arrest those responsible for the killings in order to prevent further attacks.
Attempts to obtain comments from Alfred Alabo were unsuccessful as of the time this report was filed.
