A civil society group, the Northwest Enlightenment and Mobilization Initiative (NEM), has called for the immediate resignation or removal of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, citing what it described as a total loss of public confidence in his leadership.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the group aligned itself with other organisations, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigerians in Diaspora for Good Governance, and Opposition Watch Nigeria, all of which have raised concerns about the credibility of the current INEC leadership.

NEM stated that the demand for the chairman’s removal is based on “consistent complaints from Nigerians” regarding his actions and decisions, which it alleged undermine the integrity of the electoral process.

The group further argued that the refusal of the INEC chairman to step down despite mounting criticism raises concerns about his willingness to ensure a transparent and credible electoral system.

The statement said a significant number of Nigerians have reportedly lost confidence in the chairman, accusing him of perceived bias and partisanship in handling electoral matters. The group, therefore, urged the president to take immediate action by appointing a replacement with proven integrity and neutrality.
