Ibadan accident claims 2 lives, many injured

Two persons lost their lives in a multiple motor/pedestrian accident at Soka Junction, on the Ibadan–Lagos Expressway on Saturday.

It was learnt that during the accident, several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The Oyo state Police command stated that the accident involved and damaged multiple vehicles, including a Toyota Venza and a BMW car, among others.

Oyo state Police command Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, in a statement on Sunday said preliminary findings revealed that the accident was caused by a white HOWO truck with registration number Gombe GEM696XE, driven by one Abdullahi Bashiru.

He added that, “The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to reckless driving and excessive speed, ramming into other vehicles and pedestrians.”

“The Oyo state Police Command is aware of a tragic multiple motor/pedestrian accident that occurred at Soka Junction, Ibadan, along the Ibadan–Lagos Expressway on 4th April 2026 at about 2210hrs,” he said.

“The command regrets to confirm that two (2) persons lost their lives, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The accident also involved and damaged multiple vehicles, including a Toyota Venza and a BMW car, among others.

“Preliminary findings reveal that the accident was caused by a white HOWO truck with registration number Gombe GEM696XE, driven by one Abdullahi Bashiru ‘m’. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to reckless driving and excessive speed, ramming into other vehicles and pedestrians,” Ayanlade added.

He stated further that a thorough investigation has commenced to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure that justice is served and the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Police Command, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has commiserated with the families of the deceased and he prays for the quick recovery of the injured victims.

While stating that the Oyo state Police command remains committed to the protection of lives and property, he advised motorists to exercise caution, adhere strictly to traffic regulations and avoid excessive speed to prevent needless loss of lives.

He then urged residents in the state to continue to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and useful information.
