Inter Miami CF have confirmed that head coach Javier Mascherano has stepped down for personal reasons after guiding the club to the most successful season in its history.

The former Argentina captain leaves less than a year after delivering the club’s first MLS Cup and a record-breaking 2025 campaign.

“I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF,” Javier Mascherano said.

“First and foremost, I would like to thank the Club for the trust they placed in me, every employee who is part of the organisation for the collective effort, but especially the players, who made it possible for us to experience unforgettable moments.

“I also want to thank the fans and La Familia, because none of this would have been possible without them.

“I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, and wherever I am, I will continue to wish the Club all the best moving forward. I do not doubt that the Club will continue to achieve success in the future.

“Sending you all a big hug, and thank you for everything.”

Managing owner Jorge Mas paid tribute to the departing coach.

“Javier will forever be part of this Club’s history and will always hold a special place in the Inter Miami CF family. Not only for being a key part of unforgettable achievements, such as winning the MLS Cup and the team’s historic performance at the Club World Cup, but also for the example he set through his dedication and daily work leading the team,” he said.

“We respect his decision and are deeply grateful for everything he contributed, wishing him nothing but the very best in his professional and personal future.”

Mascherano’s debut season in charge delivered silverware and records. Inter Miami won the MLS Cup and the Eastern Conference title while scoring 101 goals across the regular season and playoffs, the highest total in a single campaign in Major League Soccer history. The side also set a postseason record with 20 goals and played 58 matches in all competitions.

On the global stage, Inter Miami reached the knockout rounds of the FIFA Club World Cup, becoming the first MLS club to do so. The team also made history as the first Concacaf side to beat European opposition in an official international match and the first from the United States to claim a win in the tournament.

Regionally, the club reached the semi-finals of the Concacaf Champions Cup and a second final in the Leagues Cup.

Mascherano departs alongside the coaching staff who joined him in January 2024.

Assistant coach Guillermo Hoyos will take charge of the first team for the upcoming fixtures. The former footballer has more than two decades of playing experience and has coached across South America and Europe, including youth development work with FC Barcelona.

Meanwhile, chief soccer officer Alberto Marrero will assume sporting director duties with immediate effect as the club begins the search for a permanent replacement.
