The Honourable Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom Wike has called on Nigerians to take collective responsibility for road safety, declaring that protecting lives on the nation’s highways must not be left to government agencies alone.
She said this during her investiture as an Honourary Special Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Abuja on Friday.
Wike urged citizens to move beyond passive concerns and actively support efforts aimed at reducing road crashes, stressing that achieving safer roads requires vigilance, discipline and a shared commitment from all road users.
She also encouraged greater public participation in the FRSC Special Marshals scheme, describing it as a “vital platform” for citizen involvement in road safety advocacy and enforcement support.
The investiture ceremony, held under the auspices of the FCT Sector Command, was presided over by the Zonal Commanding Officer (RS7HQ), Assistant Corps Marshal Comfort Asom, who represented the corps marshal.
In her address, she underscored the importance of the special marshals as critical partners in promoting road safety, charging the new inductee, alongside other volunteers, to uphold the values of integrity, patriotism and selfless service.
Also present at the ceremony was the National Coordinator of Special Marshals, Engr. Dr. Usman Adaji, as well as several distinguished justices of the Court of Appeal.
In his remarks, the FCT Sector Commander, Corps Commander Tijani Iliyasu, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to strengthening public engagement and expanding road safety advocacy across the FCT.
He noted that the enlistment of respected figures such as Justice Nyesom-Wike would help drive greater compliance with traffic regulations and positively influence public behaviour.
In her concluding remarks, Wike warned against all forms of risky road behaviours and called for a nationwide awakening to the devastating consequences of road crashes.
