Governor of Ebonyi state, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has condemned the killing of the traditional ruler of Ishinkwo Community in Onicha Local Government Area, describing the act as barbaric and a threat to peace in the state.

The monarch, Eze Josephat Nnanna Ikegwu (Obinire II), was reportedly murdered by gunmen on Wednesday night in a development that has sparked outrage across the state.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, the governor expressed deep grief over the incident, describing it as a “gruesome and senseless murder” that has shaken the conscience of Ebonyi people.

“It is with a heart weighed down by grief and deep anguish that I condemn the gruesome and senseless murder of His Royal Highness,” the governor said, noting that the act was not only an attack on a revered traditional institution but also on the unity and stability of the state.

Governor Nwifuru immediately directed the state’s joint security architecture to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice without delay.

He also extended condolences to the family of the late monarch, the people of Ishinkwo Community, and residents of Onicha Local Government Area, assuring them that the government would not tolerate acts of violence.

“Let me assure the people of Ebonyi State, particularly the Ishinkwo people, that this administration will not fold its arms in the face of such evil,” he stated, adding that decisive actions had already been taken to curb insecurity and restore peace.

The governor stressed that no individual or group would be spared if found culpable, insisting that the sanctity of human life remains non-negotiable under his administration.

He further called on traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, and security agencies to work collectively to sustain peace and social order across the state.

Similarly, the Executive Chairman of Onicha Local Government Area, Ogbofia Ikechukwu, strongly condemned the killing, describing it as barbaric, senseless, and unacceptable.

Speaking during a condolence visit to Ishinkwo Community, the chairman said the incident had plunged the entire local government area into mourning.

He commiserated with the bereaved family and the community, assuring them of the council’s commitment to ensuring that justice is served.

The council boss called on security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the incident and bring the perpetrators to book.

He also reassured residents that the local government, in collaboration with security authorities, would not allow Ishinkwo or any part of Onicha LGA to become a safe haven for criminal elements.

The chairman prayed for the repose of the monarch’s soul and urged the community to remain calm as efforts intensify to apprehend those behind the killing.
