There are strong indications that the senator representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, Ibrahim Lamido, is on the verge of resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC) amid growing disagreements with the party leadership in Sokoto State.

According to Daily Trust, sources in the know told the news platform that the planned exit may materialise within days, as political tension continues to mount within the party’s ranks.

NOP NIGERIA reports that the development comes on the heels of a wave of defections by key loyalists of the senator, signalling what insiders described as a coordinated political move.

Among those who have already dumped the party is Kabiru Shehu, a former chairman of the APC in Goronyo Local Government Area and one-time sole administrator of the council.

Shehu, who also chaired the Lamido-backed faction of the APC in the area, is said to be among the early figures aligning with the senator’s next political direction.

A senior aide to Lamido, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter, confirmed that the planned resignation was part of a broader decision by the senator’s political camp.

According to the aide, “All his supporters are set to leave the APC, including the senator himself. It is only a matter of time.”

The aide further hinted that consultations had reached an advanced stage, with a final decision expected imminently.

Although the exact reasons for the looming defection have not been officially disclosed, multiple party sources attributed the development to longstanding internal disputes within the APC structure in Sokoto State.

The crisis, it was gathered, intensified following the conduct of parallel congresses by rival factions within the party.

Supporters loyal to Lamido were said to have organised separate congresses, during which they elected their own executives at the ward, local government, and state levels, deepening divisions within the party.

However, neither Lamido nor the Sokoto State leadership of the APC had issued any official statement regarding the unfolding situation as of the time of filing this report.
