Sporting director Simon Rolfes has revealed that Bayer Leverkusen agreed to loan striker Victor Boniface to Werder Bremen due to concerns about the player’s fitness.

Victor Boniface completed the temporary move last summer after a campaign disrupted by injuries, with Leverkusen opting to prioritise the forward’s recovery and long-term fitness.

Rolfes said the club and player jointly decided that regular training and a fresh environment would help the Nigerian regain peak condition.

“He was key in the championship season. He was unbelievable in his performance, and in his second season, he had a little bit of a problem with injuries and also last summer,” Rolfes told Oma Sports.

“We spoke together. We said he needs more training to get in his best shape again. And if you’re playing every three days it’s difficult because the reality is that you’re not training anymore with a team.”

Rolfes also shed light on a fresh setback during the striker’s time in Bremen. He confirmed Boniface required knee surgery after developing complications, although the procedure was successful.

“It turned out he had some problems with his knee unfortunately, needed surgery which went really well, and now he’s on his way to getting his fitness. His knee is much better. It’s a good situation, and now he has to build up his fitness again,” he added.
