Liverpool are staring at a trophyless 2025-2026 campaign despite spending a club record €484 million on eight signings last summer.
NOP NIGERIA reports that scale of the investment raised expectations of silverware at Anfield. Instead, defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals confirmed the club’s season will end without a major title.
Liverpool lost the second leg 2-0 at home on 14 April, crashing out 4-0 on aggregate and closing the final door on silverware.
The spending spree was headlined by the €144m arrival of striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. Midfielder Florian Wirtz joined from Bayer Leverkusen for €125m, while forward Hugo Ekitike arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt for €95m.
Further additions included defender Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, wing-back Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen, centre-back Giovanni Leoni from Parma, goalkeeper Armin Pecsi from Puskas Akademia and Freddie Woodman on a free transfer from Preston North End.
Despite the heavy investment, Liverpool were knocked out of the League Cup after a 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the last 16. Their FA Cup campaign ended with a heavy 4-0 loss to Manchester City in the quarter-finals. The Premier League title challenge faded early as the gap at the top widened.
The Champions League had become the final hope. PSG ended that dream with a 4-0 aggregate win.
