The Defence Headquarters says the Armed Forces of Nigeria has intensified civil-military cooperation activities nationwide as part of efforts to promote lasting peace and national stability.
The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja during the monthly operational briefing.
Onoja said the military recognised that sustainable peace could not be achieved through kinetic operations alone, hence the renewed emphasis on non-kinetic engagements across various theatres.
He said that under Operation ENDURING PEACE and other initiatives, troops carried out several community-based activities aimed at fostering unity, addressing communal tensions, and supporting livelihoods.
He added that troops also distributed fertilisers to farmers through collaboration with traditional rulers, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) to boost agricultural productivity and food security.
According to him, the initiatives included the production of educational materials such as books and cartoons to promote peaceful coexistence and counter extremist narratives.
“Civil-military relations activities were conducted in several communities, including engagements in Taraba and Nasarawa States to strengthen trust between the military and local populations,” he said.
Onoja further disclosed that a 17-kilometre unity marathon was organised to promote social cohesion and reinforce community participation in peacebuilding efforts.
He said the military also launched initiatives aimed at securing farming communities through enhanced protection, financial support mechanisms, and community partnerships.
“These efforts are designed to prevent conflicts, ensure food production, and stabilise vulnerable communities despite prevailing security challenges,” he said.
Onoja said the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, had directed all theatre commanders to fully integrate civil-military cooperation into their operational plans.
He noted that the directive was aimed at enhancing professionalism, facilitating the resettlement of displaced persons, and strengthening public confidence in military operations.
“The Armed Forces will continue to expand non-kinetic initiatives as part of a comprehensive approach to building inclusive and sustainable peace across the country,” he added. (NAN)
