The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has warned air travellers of likely flight disruptions in the coming months, citing seasonal weather challenges despite recent improvements in domestic airline operations.

The alert, issued in Lagos during a recent engagement with aviation journalists, comes as the rainy season sets in, with the authority explaining that while airline performance has improved, weather conditions and other operational factors could affect flight schedules and passenger experience.

The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, acknowledged the progress recorded in recent months, noting that operational data showed fewer disruptions compared to the last quarter of the previous year.

“The numbers are impressive and encouraging, especially because immediately after the festive period, there was a drop in the number of passengers. The number of disruptions I just checked last week has improved compared to the last quarter of last year,” he said.

However, he cautioned that such gains may be tested by seasonal realities.

“We are entering the rainy season, so there’s an expectation that there will be disruptions,” he said, while recounting his personal experience of multiple flight setbacks in a single trip. “There was a cancellation, a lengthy delay and then a slight delay before I finally got here. So, these things are to be expected.”

Furthermore, Achimugu explained that beyond weather-related issues, other operational constraints also contribute to disruptions, even as efforts are underway to strengthen airline capacity.

He noted that anticipated fleet expansion by domestic carriers, driven by recent aircraft acquisition deals, could help improve reliability and reduce bottlenecks.

Meanwhile, the authority addressed concerns over airfare pricing, particularly allegations of price-fixing raised by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). Achimugu said his office had not received any formal report on the matter but maintained his earlier position on fare increases during the festive period.

“I disagreed with the reason for the hike in airfares as stated by some operators. They alleged that it was due to taxes. I didn’t agree with that, and I still stand by that position,” he said.

In addition, the NCAA highlighted communication gaps between airlines and passengers as a major concern. Achimugu noted that delayed announcements, sudden cancellations and inadequate updates often leave travellers stranded and frustrated at airport terminals.

“There’s always a gap between what is happening in reality, what the airlines are going through and what the passengers understand,” he said.

He added that although more passengers are now utilising the NCAA’s complaint portal to seek redress, some still face challenges navigating the platform.

Consequently, the authority continues to provide alternative channels, including emails and social media platforms, to ensure passenger complaints are effectively addressed.
