The National Sports Commission (NSC) has renewed its appeal to sprint star Favour Ofili to rejoin the national team after World Athletics rejected her bid to switch allegiance to Turkey.
NOP NIGERIA reports that the decision, issued by the World Athletics Nationality Review Panel on Thursday, dismissed an application from the Türkiye Athletics Federation, citing concerns about the integrity of international competition and what it described as coordinated recruitment of athletes across several countries.
Speaking on Friday, NSC’s director general Bukola Olopade said Nigeria remains firmly behind the athlete and ready to provide the support she needs to compete at the highest level.
“She’s our daughter. We love her so much, and I’ve always said we must speak to her to come home. I am urging Ofili and those close to her that home is waiting for her,” Olopade said.
He urged the sprinter not to lose heart after the setback, pointing to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games as a major target.
“Don’t be dejected or angry. Know that we love you and we still want you back. We promise you all the support that you require to shine at the Olympics in two years’ time,” he added.
World Athletics confirmed that 11 transfer applications linked to the same recruitment drive were rejected, warning the move risked undermining the credibility of national representation in athletics.
Reports suggest Turkey is preparing an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in what could become a landmark case on nationality transfers.
Back home, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria has also welcomed the decision. Its president Tonobok Okowa called for unity around the athlete, stressing the need for stability and encouragement.
Ofili remains eligible to represent Nigeria at the World Championships and Olympic Games.
