The Katsina State Government has disbursed over ₦328 million to support 650 medical students studying in 33 accredited universities under Phase I of the 2026 Medical Students’ Allowance Scheme.
The allowance scheme, approved by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, is aimed at reducing the financial burden faced by medical students during their training while also strengthening healthcare workforce development in the state.
The Katsina State Hospital Services Management Board (KTHSMB) confirmed the disbursement in a statement issued by the Board Secretary, Abu Usman. According to the board, a total of ₦328.1 million was released to beneficiaries studying both within and outside Nigeria.
General Manager of KTHSMB, Dr. Muhammad Nazir Shehu, described the initiative as a strategic investment in the future of healthcare delivery in Katsina State.
“This is a strategic investment by the State Government to build a competent, resilient, and service-oriented healthcare workforce capable of meeting the evolving health needs of Katsina State and the nation,” he said.
Dr. Shehu explained that the allowance scheme was introduced to help medical students focus fully on their academic and professional training without the pressure of financial hardship. He noted that the government sees healthcare human capital development as critical to improving medical services across the state.
According to him, the initiative is also expected to create a steady pipeline of qualified healthcare professionals who will contribute to strengthening hospitals and public health systems in Katsina.
The board added that the scheme was carefully coordinated to ensure transparent disbursement to eligible students across the 33 universities covered under the programme.
Beneficiaries were urged to make proper use of the funds and remain committed to academic excellence, professionalism and ethical conduct throughout their studies.
“Students are expected to maintain professionalism and ethical conduct in line with the expectations and vision of the Katsina State Government,” Dr. Shehu stated.
The government said the completion of Phase I marks the beginning of broader support plans for medical students under Governor Radda’s healthcare transformation agenda, with additional phases expected to follow.
