Opposition political parties in Nigeria have called for the resignation of Joash Ojo Amupitan, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, along with other major reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The demands were outlined in a communiqué issued after a National Summit of Opposition Political Parties held in Ibadan on Saturday.
According to the communiqué, opposition leaders accused the INEC chairman of alleged bias in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress and insisted he should not oversee the 2027 elections, claiming Nigerians had lost confidence in his neutrality.
The parties also urged the National Assembly of Nigeria to urgently review the Electoral Act 2026, particularly sections they believe could undermine free and credible elections.
Other key demands included the release of detained politicians accused of bailable offences and an extension of the deadline for party primaries until the end of July 2026.
The opposition argued that recent guidelines issued by INEC created obstacles for political parties preparing for the elections.
In addition, the summit resolved to present a single presidential candidate for the 2027 election, describing the move as necessary to prevent what they called attempts to impose a one-party state.
The communiqué also expressed appreciation to Seyi Makinde and residents of Oyo State for hosting the summit.
