The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has elected Mr. Peter Azubuike as its new State Chairman following the party’s State Congress held in Umuahia on April 25, 2026.
Azubuike emerged alongside other members of the State Working Committee through a consensus arrangement adopted by delegates at the congress.
Other elected officials include Mr. Chucks Akamadu as State Secretary, Mr. Ben Otti as Organising Secretary, and Mr. Emenike Iroegbu as Publicity Secretary.
Speaking shortly after the emergence of the new executives, Governor Alex Otti commended party members for the orderly conduct of the congress, describing it as a reflection of unity and maturity within the party.
“I want to congratulate all the newly elected exco members and members of our party for conducting themselves in a decent and organised manner during the congress,” the governor said.
He emphasized the need for unity moving forward, noting that the party must operate with a common purpose.
“This is the beginning of a new era. Gone are the days when people pull in different directions. This time, we will all pull together in one direction,” he added.
Governor Otti also assured the new leadership of the party’s full support, stressing the importance of a smooth transition.

The governor further commended the immediate past Acting State Chairman, Emmanuel Otti, for his role in stabilizing the party during a challenging period leading up to the congress.
He urged him to remain committed to the party, noting that there are still responsibilities ahead for him.
In his acceptance speech, the new chairman, Peter Azubuike, pledged to unite party members and strengthen the Labour Party’s structure across the state.
He expressed gratitude to party leaders and delegates for the confidence reposed in him and promised to build on the existing momentum of the party.
Azubuike also assured that the party would leverage the growing popularity of Governor Alex Otti to secure electoral victories in future contests, particularly the 2027 general elections.
“We will work together to make the party stronger and position it for victory across Abia State,” he said.
The successful conduct of the congress is seen as a major step in consolidating the Labour Party’s influence in Abia State ahead of upcoming political activities.
