The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest and detention of one of its officers accused of extorting a motorist in the Idimu area of Lagos State.

The action follows a viral video circulating online, in which a driver alleged he was stopped by the officer despite having complete vehicle documentation and was subsequently pressured to part with money over a disagreement about the colour of his car.

According to the motorist, the officer insisted that the vehicle was “grey” rather than “ash” as indicated in the registration papers, and allegedly threatened to arrest him before demanding N30,000, which was later reduced to N10,000.

Reacting to the incident in a statement posted on X on Wednesday, the police said the officer involved has been identified and taken into custody.

The statement read, “UPDATE: The officer seen in the viral video as posted by #epiccycl has been identified, arrested, detained and queried. The #LagosPoliceNG will provide full outcome of the investigation as soon as possible.”

The Force added that the officer is currently undergoing disciplinary procedures, noting that the outcome of the investigation will be made public upon completion of internal reviews.
