The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Olorundare Moshood Jimoh, has cautioned police personnel against taking free rides in commercial vehicles, stressing that they must pay their fares like every other citizen.
He gave the directive during a public sensitisation session with transport operators at Obalende in Lagos, held as part of activities commemorating National Police Day 2026.
Speaking at the engagement, the senior police officer underscored the importance of mutual respect between law enforcement personnel and the public.
He noted that cooperation should be built on understanding rather than intimidation.
According to him, no officer is permitted to board commercial vehicles without paying, adding that abuse of authority in such situations would not be tolerated.
Jimoh also addressed concerns about misconduct within the force, reiterating a zero-tolerance stance on extortion, harassment, and arbitrary arrests.
He encouraged residents to report any wrongdoing by officers, assuring that complaints would be treated promptly and decisively.
The AIG further dismissed perceptions of friction between police officers and transport workers, calling for stronger collaboration with unions to maintain safety and order on the roads.
While urging accountability among officers, he also advised drivers to remain composed in their interactions with law enforcement agents and to avoid confrontations, recommending that grievances be reported through appropriate channels.
On road safety, Jimoh warned against risky behaviours such as speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, and the use of illicit substances. He noted that such actions significantly increase the likelihood of road accidents.
Drivers were also reminded to ensure their vehicles are in good working condition, as mechanical faults could pose serious dangers.
In conclusion, the AIG called for discipline, patience, and strict adherence to traffic regulations, emphasizing that responsible conduct both on duty and on the road contributes to overall public safety.
He reaffirmed the police command’s commitment to continuous engagement with transport stakeholders to strengthen trust and promote safer roads.
